Are totalitarian dictatorships okay so long as they're not run by atheists?

Lots of Totalitarian-style dictatorships were (and ARE, if you wish to look to Africa and the Mid East) based in abrahamic religion as well. You know what I think the real "culprit of atrocity" is? It's brainwashing a large group of people until they are slaves to an ideology...willing to die (and kill) in the name of said ideology. Religion is just as capable of producing crazed zealots as Communism, yes?
