Could Christians please explain this quote from Saul of Tarsus?

Maybe because Paul didnt believe in the gospel before. He was one of the Jews that despised christianity. But Jesus appeared to him and asked him " why do you persecute me?". This was revelation directly from God. If it hadnt been for that then Paul wouldnt have learned the gospel. Who can learn something they dont believe in?
